Getting your mail into the right hands starts with picking the right USPS class. Cost, speed, and targeting all play a role, and the option you choose can make the difference between just showing up in a mailbox or sparking real results. Here’s a breakdown of the most common mailing paths:

1. ​First Class.

Fast, reliable, and priority handling. Most pieces arrive within 1–5 business days nationwide, making it ideal for important communications and marketing alike. With 500+ pieces, presort rates help you maximize savings while keeping delivery speed on your side.

2. ​Standard Mail.

The workhorse of bulk mailing. Designed for larger campaigns where volume and savings matter more than speed. Delivery usually takes 2–10 business days depending on distance, with a minimum of 200 pieces or 50 pounds. Ideal for postcards, flyers, and catalogs where broad reach is the goal, all at a lower cost per piece.

3. Saturation Mail.

A smart way to dominate a local market. Saturation lets you mail to nearly every address on a carrier route, with no need for a custom list. It’s ideal for local coupons, restaurant menus, or neighborhood specials. By hitting the majority of homes in a defined area, you maximize impressions while keeping costs down.

4. Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM®).

EDDM gives you precision without the need for a mailing list. You can target by ZIP code, carrier route, or neighborhood, and reach between 200 and 5,000 addresses per day without a permit. Perfect for small businesses, retailers, and service providers looking to blanket an area with a message.

5. Flats.

For when you want to stand out in the stack. USPS “flats” are larger-format pieces like oversized postcards, folded newsletters, or catalogs anything bigger than 6 1/8” x 11 1/2” but not exceeding 12” x 15”. They cost more than letters but deliver unbeatable visibility, commanding attention in the mailbox.

6. Periodicals.

The go-to for newspapers, magazines, and journals. USPS Periodicals class offers the lowest postage rates for frequent, consistent publications but requires eligibility and approval. Once set up, it’s a cost-effective way to distribute to subscribers or members on a regular schedule, ensuring your content arrives reliably.
